Who May Join
At TVI, we cannot and do not accept everyone who applies to participate. At TVI, all learning experiences are participant-driven, meaning that none of the good experiences we are known for and share with our participants will just be "handed out" to you. Every person trained must sincerely seek to learn and must "earn" recovery on his or her own. We have a difficult training program and only certain individuals will be able to accept it and benefit from its approach. At TVI, each participant must exert full effort and assume responsibility for an intense self-recovery and self-instruction process.
Everyone in our program must recognize that learning is a bridge that exists between each participant and his or her own environment, both inside and outside TVI. All must demonstrate and support diversity of cultures, lifestyles, values and backgrounds, both with other TVI participants and with job providers. Our fragile "double life" at TVI, with participants inside our walls and with those outside who help our careers, is maintained through many give-and-get learning-experiences that all of us must nurture and continue to earn. This means that each and every participant must demonstrate skills to work as a team member, along with enough motivation to put in some serious extra effort.
All of our participants must support working together and actively demonstrate what they can do when they are given different work-tasks and places to work. This means that you will probably be moved around, see different work environments and do different things on a regular basis. All of us must recognize that inclusion, collaboration and cooperation will be our central themes at all times. TVI mentors, who have often been through the TVI recovery program themselves, must be allowed to act for us as collaborators and initiators. They will do this with, and for, all of our participants. These mentors must be allowed to identify and access appropriate information so they can share their expertise with others. Participants must agree that rehabilitation mentors who have freed themselves from the bonds of their own challenges are the "best choice" to help someone like themselves. All of us must also agree to help and cooperate with TVI staff so that the staff can increase their own competencies and be more responsive to the needs of challenged individuals and employers.
We carefully select our future participants and pair-up each person with a rehabilitation mentor who we believe can help that person. As we identify pairs of people, we also find out some things about each person's attitude. We begin by making a simple, beginning assessment of attitudes, knowledge and skills in relationship to the two primary groups we help: (1) challenged individuals and (2) employers seeking a constructive and diverse work force.
Our next step is to put together a learning plan that we feel can benefit you personally. Here we focus on finding your best chances for a successful employment outcome once you have finished at TVI. Our learning plan begins by looking at the level of skills (initial competencies) you need to have. These will help get you the general type of job we agree on before you start training and let us know what training strategies are necessary to get you to that stage (to perform at the required initial competencies for the job) once TVI training ends.
To help individuals develop recovery skills, TVI mentors discuss serious and controversial topics and demonstrate how to sort through the disinformation and misinformation associated with recovery. We expect each participant to respect other participants' viewpoints and to approach new ideas with interest, compassion, reason and tolerance. At every step, TVI attempts to create constructive opportunities for inclusion, but it is up to you to make the difference in your particular case.
Think carefully and fully about what was written in these paragraphs and ask yourself whether your central values are compatible with those we have expressed in this website. If not, we respect that your path is separate from ours. But if what we have stated here strikes a cord of truth within you, we sincerely invite you to contact us to inquire about our programs.
